Password Reset option available in Exchange 2007 SP3

This was one of the feature many Administrators ware waited for, though it’s available in Exchange 2010, it was something ignored in Exchange 2007, but now with the release of SP3, Administrators can allow OWA users to change their passwords, this comes really handy when you have many mobile users in your environment, though it’s available in SP3 by default this feature is turned off, you need to change following registry key in your CAS server in order to make it available to end users.

To enable the password reset feature

  1. Log on to the Exchange server that is running the CAS role by using an account that has local administrator rights.
  2. Start Registry Editor, and then locate the following registry subkey:

HLKM\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\MSExchange OWA

  1. Create the following DWORD value if it does not already exist:

Value name: ChangeExpiredPasswordEnabled Value type: REG_DWORDValue data: 1

  1. Exit Registry Editor.

Setting up permission on Exchange 2010 folders using ExFolders

With the release of Exchange 2010, WebDAV support for Exchange 2010 has taken off, so PFDAVAdmin (earlier version of ExFolders) is no longer usable to set permission on exchange folders.

ExFolders is the replacement of PFDAVAdmin for Exchange 2010 .

You can download this tool from http://msexchangeteam.com/files/12/attachments/entry453398.aspx

You must this tool from an Exchange Server 2010 machine with the Microsoft Exchange Active Directory Topology service, which means it will not currently run on a tools-only install. This might change in the future.

To run the tool : ExFolders.exe must be placed in the server's Exchange \bin folder. If you try to run it from anywhere else, it will simply crash.

Currant build of this program is not signed. In order to allow it to run, you can import the “TurnOffSNVerificationForExFolders.reg” file on the server where you want to run the tool

After importing the tool you can simply run the ExFolders.exe

And then select the GC and the Exchange Database which you wants to set permissions

clip_image001

Then Select the mailbox of the folder you wants to set permission

clip_image002

Right click and select folder permission

clip_image003

Then add the users and give the appropriate permission you want to give

Then click on commit changes

clip_image004

Then Right Click again on the root folder you wants to set permission

clip_image003[1]

Click on Propagate Folder ACEs

clip_image006

Click on the check box in front of the user you wants to set permission and select Add/Replace to propagate the permission on all chilled objects or select remove if you wants to remove the permission from all chilled objects.

No Single Instance Storage in Exchange 2010

With a big change is store schema, Exchange 2010 don’t support Single Instance Storage, which means if you send 2 MB attachment to 10 people with in the same database, it will take up 20 MB of your database size, in previous versions Exchange DB only had one instance of that 2MB attachment.

With the removal of Single Instance Storage from 2010, the exchange product team estimates an increase in database size of upto 20%. This has to be considered when designing a 2010 environment. As the Extensible Storage Engine (ESE) is optimized for handling large (10Gb+) mailboxes in 2010. So this limitation is not a very big problematic when you conceder the scalability options available in Exchange 2010.

Error message when you try to remove Exchange Server from a mailbox server that no longer hosts mailboxes: "One or more users currently use a mailbox store on this server"

When you try to decommission Exchange 2000 or a 2003 Server from your exchange environment you will get the above error even after moving al mailboxes and services to another Exchange server in the same Org.

This happens because of you are having a user with his Exchange home server set as the server name you are trying to uninstall. Home server is defined in Active Directory with msExchHomeServer attribute

To find and move the affected mailbox to a running exchange server in your organization and perform your uninstall process without troubles, follow the steps below.

Go to Administrative Tools –> Active Directory Users and Computers

Right click on the Domain container and select Find.

In the Find Users, Contacts, and Groups dialog box, click the Exchange tab, click to select the Show only Exchange recipient’s check box, and Users with Exchange mailbox and then click Find Now.

Now to get msExchHomeServer attribute you need to change the view columns.

Go to the View menu, click Choose Columns.

In the Choose Columns dialog box, click Exchange Home Server in the Columns available list, click Add, and then click OK.

Click the Exchange Home Server column to sort the results in the Exchange Home Server column.

Now you can determined is there any user with Home Server attribute set to the affected server, so that you can either move that mailbox to any other available Server or remove the mailbox if its not required.

Exchange 2010 Deployment Assistant

Another awesome work by the Exchange Team.

The Exchange Server 2010 Deployment Assistant allows an Administrator to create Exchange 2010 on-premises deployment instructions that are customized to their environment. The Assistant asks a small set of questions, and based on a customer’s answers to those questions, it provides a finite set of instructions that are designed to get the customer up and running on Exchange 2010 and well on their way to decommissioning legacy servers.  The idea is that, instead of wading through the 2000+ topics in the Exchange 2010 library, a customer can answer a few simple questions, and the Assistant gives them just enough customized content to do the upgrade.

Currently, content is available for customers upgrading from Exchange 2003. Additional upgrade scenarios will be available in the tool in early 2010.

Missing Out of Office assistant option in outlook 2003 tools menu

I had a user who said he’s missing his Out of Office assistant option in outlook 2003 tools menu.

He’s able to access his Out of Office assistant option through OWA but not with Outlook 2003, then I found the issue, you can follow the below instruction to get Out of Office assistant option back in outlook 2003.

Open Outlook

1. On the Tools menu, click Options, click Other, click Advanced Options, and click Add In Manager.

2. If Exchange Extensions Commands appears in the list of add-ins, click to select it.

3. If Exchange Extensions Commands is not on the list, click Install. From the list of add-ins that appears, double-click Emsuix.ecf

This should solve the missing Out of Office assistant option issue.

How-to Change logon screen in Windows 7

If you want to change your logon screen background to a image that you like instead of the default one, there are many ways to do that.

one is changing the registry key

HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Authentication\LogonUI\Background

and setting the OEMBackground key value to 1.

and then creating a folder “info\backgrounds”under %windir%\System32\oobe\

and then placing your image file with a size of 256kb with a file name of backgroundDefault.jpg.

that is too much to do to change my logon image, here is the simple and easiest way.

download this free and simple tool and you are done, you can put any image into your logon screen with few clicks.

Note: if your image don't match with your screen resolution this tool will adjust it accordingly, so make sure you select a image with required size and quality

Exchange Server 2010 RC mailbox server role un-installation error

I tried uninstalling my Exchange 2010 server which was running all my server roles and I came across with the following error when it try to uninstall the mailbox server role.

"Uninstall cannot continue. Database 'Mailbox Database 2315386291': This mailbox database contains one or more mailboxes or arbitration mailboxes. To get a list of all mailboxes in this database, run the command Get-Mailbox -Database . To get a list of all arbitration mailboxes in this database, run the command Get-Mailbox -Database -Arbitration. Before you can remove this mailbox database, you must disable, move, or remove user mailboxes and move arbitration mailboxes. "

I tried removing all the mailboxes using the GUI, even after removing all the mailboxes i was getting the same error, then I tried removing the database itself, but no luck, even the database cannot be removed until you remove the arbitration mailboxes out of the database,

even though you remove all mailboxes using GUI there are arbitration mailboxes which is NOT visible in GUI are present in a mailbox server.

To remove the arbitration mailboxes you need to follow the below steps. (You need to use Exchange Management shell for this, no GUI)

1st you need to get arbitration mailbox IDs before you can remove them, for that go to Exchange Management Shell and run the following command.

Get-mailbox -arbitration | fl name, identity

I don’t have the screen shots put here because I already uninstalled my server.

After running above command you can get the list of arbitrations mailboxes and mailbox IDs associated with them. Then you run the following command with related mailbox ID to remove them one by one.

Remove-mailbox -identity "domain.com/Users/SystemMailbox{1f05a927-563f-4671-8a1b-487764400889}" -arbitration -RemoveLastArbitrationMailboxAllowed

Or you can run below command to remove all arbitration mailboxes out of the server
Get-Mailbox -Arbitration | Remove-Mailbox -Arbitration -RemoveLastArbitrationMailboxAllowed

Now you can proceed with your un-installation of your Exchange 2010 mailbox server.

Happy un-installation!!.
